Benone ½ Marathon Beach Race

Date of Event

16th October 2021

About Event

The Causeway Coast Benone ½ Marathon is back for 2021.

Due to the huge success of the inaugural event in 2020, we have decided to make this event an annual fixture in our calendar. Unlike 2020 this isn’t a substitute for the traditional Causeway Coast Marathon but an additional stand-alone event to the 26 Extreme portfolio. The Causeway Coast Marathon is also planned to take place in September as usual. This is your chance to run on undoubtably one of the top beaches on the Island of Ireland. It will be the Northern Irish take on a marathon des sables, with the entire course being run on sand, with the stunning vista of the Causeway Coast and Donegal.

For 2021 there will two event categories, the ½ Marathon race or challenge walk in aid of Cancer Focus NI.
The entire event takes place on the beach, including the start and finish. The exact details of start times and mass starts will be closely monitored in the lead to the event. We hope to have a traditional mass start at 10am but this will be subject to government restrictions.

The entry fee is £40pp for both the ½ marathon race and challenge walk .

1) How difficult is each event?

Without us knowing your level of fitness the answer to this question is difficult but we would say that unless you have put in the training and have the miles in your legs please do not enter a distance option that you know will be out of your league. Running on sand can be particularly challenging especially if the sand is soft due to environmental factors in the days before the event. We have five distance options – choose carefully!

2) Do you have any recommended kit for the event?

Running shoes / Walking Boots, Hydration pack, cup or water bottle, Energy snacks, Windproof top, Hat or Buff.  Participants must be aware that weather conditions along the coastline can change and deteriorate rapidly and should bring appropriate clothing to keep them warm in any adverse weather. It is also essential that all competitors undertake a training programme in the months leading up to this event to ensure the day is as memorable as possible.  Your feet might get wet, so prepare for all eventualities.

3) Where is the parking area for the event?

There will be ample free parking at the Causeway Coast & Glens Leisure Complex in Benone near the start line. You will receive a final info email with details on how to find this parking area in the week leading to the event.

4) Where is the event registration area?

Registration is located at the Start finish line and will be clearly signposted from the Leisure Complex.

5) What’s included in my entry fee?

Professionally organised event by 26 Extreme, Public Liability insurance, electronic timing system, Race number, Course marking, manned check points, hydration stations, Event Finishers Medal, Prizes for each category, VAT.

6) Is there anything sent to me in the post before the event?

Everything will be sent via email

7) Are there any feed / hydration stations?

There will be a touch free water station roughly every 5k in the course. It is your responsibility to carry a means to collect water in the form of a collapsible drinks cup or
water bottle for example.

8) Where is the best place for my family to see me taking part?

We are actively requesting that only participants arrive to the event currently, and would ask that you discourage spectators from attending, to reduce numbers at the event area and ensure social distancing can be maintained, and to keep all participants and members of the public safe.

9) Can I raise money for Charity?

Yes, we have no problem with participants raising money for charities and other worthwhile causes. If you haven’t yet signed up with a charity please consider Cancer Focus NI. They are once again our chosen charity and a very worthy cause.

10) Do you have any rules that I have to adhere to?

The event is open to runners, and walkers of 18 years of age and over. Participants must
ensure they have appropriate footwear, clothing and have access to water and energy food whilst competing. All participants must refer to the recommended kit list. All participants must follow the prescribed course & adhere to the spirit of the event by showing courtesy to other trail users, dropping no litter – we operate a Leave No Trace Policy. If you drop your rubbish you WILL be disqualified. Leaving gates as found and offering fellow runners who are injured, exhausted or confused, help and support. In addition there will be a new bolt on set of Social Distancing rules to keep everyone safe on the race course. This will be communicated to you in the lead up to the event and made available online. It is very important that you read them carefully and help us with the return to events.

11) Will I have to sign a Disclaimer?

Yes, by entering the event you will be bound by the event disclaimer, which is available on the entry page, and also HERE.

12) Can I get a refund if I have to pull out?

Once entered, NO REFUNDS or credits of any kind can be offered for withdrawals from the event.
