The Causeway Coast Marathon Events

In 2010 the Causeway Coast Marathon arrived onto the running calendar as the second ever mass participation off road marathon in Ireland and second only to the Mourne Way Marathon that was staged for the first time the year before.

Brainchild of newly formed events company 26 Extreme Ltd the event quickly grew momentum attracting competitors from all over Ireland the UK and beyond.

The event HQ and finish line is located in the quiet sea side village of Portballintrae providing the perfect location to head out onto the headlands and beyond.

The event comprises of 5 categories, the 10km, ½ Marathon, Marathon, Ultra and Challenge Walk, the Marathon and Walk are looped events and start and finish in Portballintrae.

The Ultra, 1/2 marathon and 10km require a bus journey to the start line provided as part of your entry.

Portballintrae and North Coast

The North Coast of Northern Ireland needs little introduction.

Its rugged coastline of cliffs beaches and bays looking out across the North Channel towards Scotland are world famous and for good reason.

The coastal path provides one of the most epic and stunningly beautiful courses in the world. Runners even get to run through the world-famous Giants Causeway and climb the infamous Shepherd’s steps on the outward routes. It’s difficult to put into words how spectacular the views are. Portballintrae is located just a few miles from town of Bushmills and has been the home of the event since it started in 2010.

Portballintrae has an excellent hotel called the Bayview with excellent accommodation, bar and restaurant.

The seaside resort towns of Portrush and Portstewart are also a short drive away with plenty of options to stay, eat and drink.

What happens once you’re entered?

Once you enter you will receive a confirmation of your entry on screen, by email and you will also be able to view your entries in your online account. There’s nothing else required from you until the day of the event, and we won’t spam you with constant updates. We will use the email address you used to enter to forward you any updates.  In the last few days prior to the event you will be sent a final information email to confirm all arrangements are in place as planned and update you on any last minute changes, if any. It’s important you let us know if you update you change your email to allow us to update our records.

On the day parking

With all mass participation events parking can sometimes cause problems and congestion on the day of an event. It’s important that competitors when parking park legally and respectfully. The main car park at Portballintrae is strictly off limits to competitors as its intended for day visitors and spectators. Parking will be available in designated areas on the road leading to the event centre and the main road leading into Portballintrae. Parking here will result in a long walk so be prepared. It’s extremely important that care is taken not to obstruct any residents access in an out of their property or private parking areas, and to park legally and well to allow for traffic to remain flowing. This can potentially jeopardize the continued use of the town for future events.

Pack Collection

Once parked follow the signage to the Event Registration area. This is also the Finish line, and start location for the 10k, Marathon, Ultra and walking events.

The course traverses the Causeway Coastal Path and takes in some of the best scenery and trail running Ireland has to offer. All event categories will take in a mix of terrain. From rocks, gravel and sand to mud, grass and seaweed. We often get asked “can I get away with road shoes?” and the answer is always NO! be prepared for everything.

Marshals & Way marking

We spend a lot of time in the lead up to the event waymarking with various temporary signage. This signage is reusable in line with our ban on single use plastic and the use of spray paint.  We keep it as discreet as possible so as not to take away from the beauty of the landscape but obvious enough that you don’t miss it. Having said that you do need to keep a close eye on the trail ahead as it’s easy to get distracted and miss an arrow. Marshals will be located at key locations on the course to monitor you progress and offer help and advice if required. All marshals are employed team members with REC First aid as a minimum and experienced in their role. Our team is there to help you with whatever you need.

Aid and feed/water Stations

We take the support we offer you seriously and our support stations are regular and renowned for providing variety of food and hydration appropriate to endurance sport at stages in the race where its most needed. A detailed summary of each aid location is listed in each category description. New for 2022 we are going back to the original format of bussing competitors to the start of the Ultra, and Half Marathon events.
