Mourne Way Marathon 2021

Event Planned Start

21st August 2021

The Mourne Way Marathon is back for 2021 with a new course and event format to ensure the race will run smoothly and is less likely to be affected by any last minute local restrictions.

We are delighted to add the Mourne way back to our events portfolio for 2021 after the disappointment of 2020. Let’s get back to trail running one step at a time.

THE COURSE

The 2021 course has been amended to run in an out and back format starting and finishing in Kilbroney park. We have made this decision to eliminate the requirement  to bus participants to the start line. We have also reduced the event categories to ½ marathon 10km and Challenge Walk. Both distances will be entirely off road and head out along the traditional route before turning and returning along the same course.

There will not be a bus transfer to start lines, all events will begin and end in Kilbroney Park to ensure Covid Safety.

The categories and distances

We will not have an ultra or full marathon in 2021. We hope to return to normal operations in 2022 with the addition of a 100 mile double ultra. 2021 options are as follows:

Half Marathon Run

Half Marathon Walk

10km run

10km Challenge Walk

FAQ

Please note that this section will be added to as questions are asked by competitors.

1) How difficult is each event?

Without us knowing your level of fitness the answer to this question is difficult but we would say that unless you have put in the training and have the miles in your legs please do not enter a distance option that you know will be out of your league. Running on sand can be particularly challenging especially the weather in the lead up to the causes soft ground.

2) Do you have any recommended kit for the event?

Running shoes / Walking Boots, Hydration pack, cup or water bottle, Energy snacks, Windproof top, Hat or Buff.  Participants must be aware that weather conditions along the coastline and Mourne Mountains can change and deteriorate rapidly and should bring appropriate clothing to keep them warm in any adverse weather. It is also essential that all competitors undertake a training programme in the months leading up to this event to ensure the day is as memorable as possible.  Your feet might get wet, so prepare for all eventualities.

 3) Where is the parking area for the event?

Parking will be clearly signposted on arrival to Kilbroney park. Your final info emailed out before the event will also detail directions and give you all the info you need to get to the start line.

 4) Where is the event registration area?

This will be clearly signposted on arrival to Kilbroney park.

Professionally organised event by 26 Extreme, Public Liability insurance, electronic timing system, Race number, Course marking, manned check points, hydration stations, feed stations, Paramedics and ambulances, Event Finishers Medal, Prizes for each category, VAT.

 6) Is there anything sent to me in the post before the event?

Everything will be sent via email

 7) Are there any feed / hydration stations?

There will be a touch free water station roughly every 5k in the course. It is your responsibility to carry a means to collect water in the form of a collapsible drinks cup or water bottle for example. There will also be food available at each point.

 8) Where is the best place for my family to see me taking part?

Details will be sent out in the participant final info.

 9) Can I raise money for Charity?

Yes, we have no problem with participants raising money for charities and other worthwhile causes. If you haven’t yet signed up with a charity please consider Cancer Focus NI. They are once again our chosen charity and a very worthy cause.

10) Do you have any Rules that I have to adhere to?

The event is open to runners, and walkers of 18 years of age and over. Participants must ensure they have appropriate footwear, clothing and have access to water and energy food whilst competing. All participants must refer to the recommended kit list. All participants must follow the prescribed course & adhere to the spirit of the event by showing courtesy to other trail users, dropping no litter – we operate a Leave No Trace Policy. If you drop your rubbish you WILL be disqualified. Leaving gates as found and offering fellow runners who are injured, exhausted or confused, help and support.

In addition there will be a new bolt on set of Social Distancing rules to keep everyone safe on the race course. This will be communicated to you in the lead up to the event and made available online. It is very important that you read them carefully and help us with the return to events.
